Pininfarina have been famous in the luxury car market for decades. The design company has been hired by marques such as Ferrari and Maserati to produce some of the most gorgeous cars ever made. The recent news that Andrea Pininfarina has passed away has rocked the car industry.
He was riding a scooter in the Italian city of Turin when he was hit by a car on Thursday. He was just 51. His role was chief executive of the company, which was very much a family firm. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy has said that he was "the representative of a dynasty that helped bring the story of 'made in Italy' to the world".
Montezemolo, the head at Ferrari, said: "Italy, Turin and the Fiat group have lost a business figure who knew how to follow and develop the work of his grandfather Pinin and his father Sergio." Mr Pininfarina trained as a mechanical engineer and joined the family business in 1983. He was the grandson of Battista Pininfarina, who founded the firm in 1930.
Pininfarina are most famous for working with Ferrari and most recently for creating the custom P4/5 supercar based on the Enzo, for American millionaire James Glickenhaus.
Pininfarina designed classics such as the 1952 Ferrari 250, 1955 Superamerica, the 1968 Daytona and in more recent years, the 612 Scaglietti and 599 Fiorano. They also worked closely with Maserati on the GranTurismo and the stunning 75th anniversary Birdcage.
Andrea Pininfarina was married to Cristina Pellion di Persano and leaves three sons, Benedetta, Sergio and Luca.
