In the ever changing and evolving world of sports nutrition, traditionally and historically seen to favour all things Stateside, PhD Nutrition have made huge steps in the UK market, with their genuine ethos which emphasises proven quality rather than over-hyped possibility. We at Lusso are always interested in fast growing companies, so we've investigated to find out more.
Started in March of 2006 by two English fitness and nutritional experts, PhD Nutrition has outgrown many more established UK and US brands in a short period of time. Backed up by a team of 100% drug-free athletes, all champions in their chosen sport and with a solid ethos of providing consumer and retailer education, rather than sales BS, PhD Nutrition have tapped into the consciousness of the British sports nutrition consumer with their refreshing and honest approach, innovative and fresh product line and transparent approach to brand marketing.
Recently voted in the top 2 of a leading magazine award ceremony, PhD Nutrition outstripped 10 and 15 year industry veterans to almost claim top prizes in the “Most Innovative” and “Products that produce the best results” category. Lusso spoke to the PhD Nutrition managing director to find out more about their success.
“The two categories we care about are the two that show that our hard work in creating an honest sports nutrition brand is also perceived to be innovative and that’s what we have always strived for. Before PhD Nutrition, the market was a hot-bed of imported American products that were over priced, over-hyped and contained ingredients that simply have not been proven to work. PhD Nutrition products are about delivering results, so we’re happy that this is the general perception of the consumer”
In early 2008, PhD Nutrition released the “Pharma-Whey Eco-Pouch”, a fully resealable, recyclable packaging solution for a product that can increase muscle repair, recovery and size. This product set a trend for the UK market, with other companies attempting to copy the innovation. However it is PhD Nutrition’s stand-alone product, “Synergy-ISO-7™” that really makes the brand unique within the industry. Rather than fooling consumers into buying 5-6 separate sports nutritional products at a time, PhD Nutrition designed Synergy-ISO-7™ to fit the needs of all athletes, with everything “under one roof” so to speak. Containing protein, carbohydrates, Creatine, Glutamine, BCAA’s and other great lean muscle-building ingredients, Synergy-ISO-7™ took the market by storm and has not stopped yet.
I've personally been using Synergy for the last few months to support my gym work and its a fantastic product. Being a patriotic Brit, its always great to support a home grown company. The results have been excellent and it tastes many multiples better than the competition.
The PhD brand is designed to cater for every athlete, definitely not just the stereotypical “muscle head” you see in the gym. In fact in late 2007, PhD Nutrition sponsored the entire crew of team La Mondiale, in their cross Atlantic world-record breaking crew rowing feat. In fact, the crew were so impressed with the assistance the products offered them, they wrote numerous testimonials to be featured in the recent PhD product guide 2008. Words from skipper, Leven Brown below.
"When you're in the middle of an ocean trying to break a record with no support from the outside world nutrition and taste counts. PhD allowed our crew to function at the top of their game throughout our voyage. This record stood for 16 years and 60 attempts prior to us were made to break it - we knocked more than 2 days off it - that's the PhD factor."

PhD Nutrition were also the official nutrition sponsors of the victorious 2008 Oxford boat race crew- as also seen in the company Brochure. Rugby League is also a sport that PhD have supported, along with many top teams utilising their product range, in 2007 and 2008 PhD worked with Sky Sports by sponsoring pitch side advertising at 12 live super league games.
PhD Nutrition work with top drug-free athletes from all sporting sectors, some of our team include:
Dr Rosi Sexton- world famous female MMA champion Fivos Averkiou- Champion drug-free Bodybuilder Kristelle Sammons- Top UK Personal trainer and trained figure champion Phil Learney- Published author, strength and conditioning coach to top athletes.
The company aim to increase the team within 2008/9 to feature some of UK’s brightest sporting talents.
Soon to move into TV advertising, PhD Nutrition are insistent that their original message of “Innovation for the modern athlete” is upheld along the entirety of their brand life. This is a serious industry and consumers take their health and their well-being equally so, therefore it’s vital that the market provides what the modern-day athlete requires.
